Bistro Este – Movin On Up (The Road)
Bistro Este on the lower end of the Newtownards road was one of those true hidden gems.
We had lots of happy memories in there. It was the last dinner my wife and i had before she gave birth (not immediately before she gave birth!)
A husband and wife team gave it a real homely feel, and the service was perfect.
The food was top notch without being wanky… or expensive.
It’s charm was that it was in a place that you wouldn’t normally expect such amazing food. But it’s location probably started to go against it. Sited next door to the Alliance office in east Belfast, it soon became the inadvertent victim of Flag Protests.
We were gutted to hear they were closing down, and felt like we’d really lost something great. It felt like Northern Ireland and it’s unique circumstances had defeated some of the good guys.
But the good news is they had bigger plans. They’ve moved up the road to Ballyhackamore to join what is fast becoming Belfast’s food hot spot!
No doubt with a bigger kitchen, more tables and a handier location. It’s sure to be a runaway success.
I just hope they still do breakfasts – they do an incredible sausage sandwich.
Good luck to everyone involved.
They’re due to open in the coming week.
